FASTag Annual Pass 2025 Introduced for Private Vehicles
In a major step towards making highway commutes more affordable and seamless, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has announced a new FASTag-based annual pass exclusively for non-commercial private vehicles. The government aims to simplify toll payments and reduce costs for frequent travellers across India’s national highways.

The new FASTag annual pass will be priced at Rs. 3,000 and will be valid for either 200 trips or one year from the date of activation, whichever comes first. This move is set to benefit thousands of private vehicle owners who commute regularly on national highways and face recurring toll deductions.
How the FASTag Annual Pass Works
Each time a vehicle crosses a toll plaza, it will count as one trip under the annual pass system. Once a user completes 200 trips or reaches the one-year validity period, the pass will need renewal. The activation and renewal processes will be handled digitally via the Rajmarg Yatra App along with the official websites of NHAI and MoRTH.
Key Highlights of the FASTag Annual Pass
- Applicable only to non-commercial private vehicles — cars, jeeps, and vans
- Valid only on national highways (not applicable to state highways)
- Activation and renewal via Rajmarg Yatra App
- Cost-effective solution for frequent commuters
- 200 trips or one-year validity period
Major Cost Savings for Frequent Highway Users
Speaking on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized that this policy addresses long-standing concerns regarding toll plazas located within a 60 km radius and helps simplify toll collection through a single transaction.
Currently, crossing a single toll costs between Rs. 80 to 100. With the new pass, the effective cost per trip is expected to drop to nearly Rs. 15 per toll crossing, allowing travellers to save approximately Rs. 7,000 annually, according to Gadkari’s statement.
“This is a long-awaited reform that will directly benefit regular highway users and significantly reduce their travel expenses,” the minister said.
Only for National Highways, Not Expressways (For Now)
The ministry has clarified that the FASTag annual pass will currently be applicable only for toll plazas on national highways. There is no confirmation yet on whether this system will extend to expressways or state highways in the future.

Next Phase: Removing Physical Toll Plazas Entirely
In addition to this announcement, the government is also preparing for the next phase of toll collection modernization by exploring a fully digital toll system that may eliminate the need for physical toll plazas altogether. The proposed system aims to reduce congestion, cut down wait times, and eliminate disputes at toll collection points, further improving India’s highway travel experience.
Conclusion
The FASTag-based annual pass is a progressive step towards offering affordable, convenient, and technology-driven solutions for India’s growing highway traffic. With significant savings for regular commuters, the new system could become a model for other transportation reforms in the future.
