Unbeaten Streak Continues for the Proteas

383332.4 1

South Africa have strengthened their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with a thrilling 7-run win over defending champions England in a high-stakes Super Eight clash at the Daren Sammy Ground, Saint Lucia. The victory sees the Proteas go 6-for-6, keeping their unbeaten run intact and all but booking a semifinal berth.

In a contest defined by fine margins, South Africa defended what appeared to be a below-par total of 163, thanks to an all-round team effort that included key contributions from Quinton de Kock, Keshav Maharaj, Anrich Nortje, and captain Aiden Markram.

De Kock Leads the Charge with Quickfire Fifty

383436.4

After being put in to bat by England captain Jos Buttler, Quinton de Kock continued his stellar form with a blazing half-century off just 22 balls—matching the fastest fifty in this tournament. His aggressive start propelled South Africa to 63 without loss in the Powerplay, their second-best of the World Cup.

While Reeza Hendricks struggled to find fluency, de Kock’s blitz ensured South Africa had the upper hand early. The opening partnership reached 86 before Hendricks fell, and de Kock was eventually dismissed for 65 following a stunning leaping catch by Jos Buttler.

England Spinners Pull It Back

England clawed back into the match through their spin duo. Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali choked the middle overs, conceding only 45 runs in their combined seven overs. The seamers followed suit with well-executed slower balls, limiting South Africa to just 100 runs in the last 14 overs. Jos Buttler’s sharp run-out of Heinrich Klaasen further highlighted England’s fielding brilliance.

Still, South Africa managed a respectable 163/6, with cameos from Miller and Stubbs aiding the recovery.

England’s Chase Falls Agonizingly Short

England’s response was cautious early, scoring only 41 in the Powerplay—well below their standards. Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal and Phil Salt’s early exit added pressure, and despite a spirited 50 off 35 balls by Harry Brook, the required run-rate continued to mount.

A costly over from Ottneil Baartman that leaked 21 runs brought England back into the game, but Aiden Markram’s bold decision to give Anrich Nortje the final over paid off. Nortje held his nerve, and Markram himself took a phenomenal catch running back 18 meters to dismiss Brook, effectively sealing the win for South Africa.

Key Performers

  • Quinton de Kock: 65 off 38 balls with aggressive strokeplay in the Powerplay.
  • Keshav Maharaj: 2 wickets for 25 in his 4 overs, controlling the middle overs.
  • Anrich Nortje: Tight final over under pressure and a key wicket.
  • Aiden Markram: Outstanding captaincy and a game-defining catch.

What This Means for the Semis

South Africa’s unbeaten streak makes them strong contenders for a semifinal spot. England, on the other hand, will need to beat the USA convincingly to stay in the race, with net run-rate (NRR) possibly playing a role in determining their fate.

The clash was a showcase of elite-level cricket with moments of individual brilliance, tactical masterstrokes, and drama befitting a World Cup knockout environment—even if it’s technically not yet the knockout stage.
