Introduction

In a controversial move that has sparked international debate, the Taliban has officially suspended the game of chess in Afghanistan, citing concerns over gambling and religious propriety. This decision is the latest in a series of cultural and sporting restrictions imposed by the Taliban since they retook power in August 2021. The suspension, which took effect this week, reflects the group’s strict interpretation of Islamic Sharia law and raises questions about the future of recreation and intellectual freedom in the country.

1. Gambling Concerns Under Islamic Law

The primary reason stated by Taliban officials is that chess is allegedly a gateway to gambling—something considered haram (forbidden) in Islam. Atal Mashwani, a spokesperson for the Taliban’s sports directorate, noted, “There are religious considerations regarding the sport of chess.” Until a formal ruling is made on its compatibility with Islamic values, the game is suspended nationwide.

2. Religious Justification Based on Sharia

Islamic scholars have historically debated chess’s permissibility. Some classical interpretations viewed it as a distraction from religious duties or a platform for betting. The Taliban, known for their ultra-conservative approach, seem to be aligning with these interpretations despite chess being widely accepted in many Muslim-majority countries such as Iran and Turkey.

3. Targeting Activities Linked to Social Interaction

Chess, like other informal games, often brings people together in cafes and public spaces. A café owner in Kabul, Azizullah Gulzada, expressed disappointment over the ban, stating that it would hurt his business and limit the recreational options for young people. “They would have a cup of tea and challenge their friends to a game of chess,” he said, emphasizing its role in daily life and social bonding.

4. Pattern of Increasing Cultural Restrictions

This ban follows a broader pattern of repression. In recent years, the Taliban has banned a variety of sports, especially for women. Mixed martial arts (MMA), for instance, was banned in 2021 on the grounds that it was “too violent” and incompatible with Sharia. Such actions illustrate the Taliban’s ongoing attempt to mold Afghan society according to their ideological vision.

5. Global Backlash and Contradictions

The chess ban has drawn criticism globally, especially from advocates of cultural freedom and human rights. Critics point out that chess is not only a non-violent game but also an educational tool that enhances critical thinking. The move seems contradictory given its acceptance in many Islamic countries and highlights the Taliban’s increasingly isolated worldview.

Conclusion

While the Taliban insists that their decisions are rooted in religious doctrine, many Afghans and international observers view this chess ban as yet another step toward cultural isolation and repression. As Afghanistan continues to struggle under strict ideological rule, such decisions may deepen the country’s disconnect from global norms and undermine efforts at social development.
