Hollywood A-lister Brad Pitt F1 is back in pole position — this time in the fast-paced world of Formula 1. His latest film, F1: The Movie, filmed at Silverstone and other real Grand Prix venues, premieres in cinemas this week. Pitt stars as Sonny Hayes, a fictional veteran driver making a bold return to the grid.
“Hallowed Ground” at Silverstone

Pitt described filming at Silverstone Circuit — the iconic home of the British Grand Prix — as “very humbling,” calling it “hallowed ground” for racing fans. The production set up a fully operational garage inside the actual pit lane during both the 2023 and 2024 races, allowing for an unprecedented level of realism.
“We just wanted to make sure we didn’t get in anyone’s way,” said Pitt, 61, who trained in real F2 cars purchased by the production team for him and co-star Damson Idris.
Hollywood Meets the Brad Pitt F1 Lane
Joseph Kosinski, the acclaimed director of Top Gun: Maverick, helmed the project. Filming at live F1 races meant following F1’s strict schedule — a logistical feat rarely attempted in feature films.
“Usually we control the schedule — here we had to work around the Grand Prix,” said Kosinski. The result is a hybrid of Hollywood action and real-life F1 grit, with appearances by Lewis Hamilton (also a producer), Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz, and Charles Leclerc.
Immersive Performances
Damson Idris, playing young prodigy Joshua Pearce, said the hands-on experience added authenticity: “At those speeds, it’s a freeing feeling. By the end, we felt we could actually compete.”

Even veteran pit lane staff like Rob Jaina, who worked as a safety officer for over 20 years, were cast to ensure realism. Jaina described seeing Brad Pitt on set: “Bright yellow shirt, matching trousers and hat — and he still looked cool.”
A Landmark for the Sport
Formula 1 itself has hailed the film as a major moment in motorsport culture. “It’s not just a movie,” said one F1 insider. “It’s a landmark for the sport.”
