As Gaza enters its eleventh week of total blockade, residents are reporting conditions akin to famine. With humanitarian aid halted, medical supplies dwindling, and food kitchens closing, the civilian population—particularly children—is suffering intensely.
A Child’s Cry for Food
At a food distribution point in northern Gaza, six-year-old Ismail Abu Odeh cried as his only bowl of lentils was knocked from his hands. His desperation is echoed by thousands of displaced Palestinians who are struggling to feed their families under Israel’s siege of the enclave.

“My children go to sleep hungry,” Ismail’s father told the BBC. “Sometimes I sit and cry like a little kid if I don’t manage to provide food for them.”
UN Warns of Impending Famine
The United Nations has warned that Gaza is on the verge of famine. Aid groups are raising alarms over the lack of access to clean water, food, and medicine, particularly in displacement camps across Gaza City and central Gaza.
Israel maintains that there is “no food shortage” and blames Hamas for allegedly looting aid supplies. However, families and aid workers report empty shelves, shuttered food kitchens, and markets with prices far beyond what most can afford.
Inventing Meals to Survive

Displaced Gazan Adham al-Batrawi shared how he turns overcooked pasta into dough to simulate bread. “We’ve invented ways to cook and eat that we never imagined we’d need,” he said via WhatsApp. His family gets by on one improvised meal a day—“just enough to survive.”
Medical Collapse and Hospital Strikes
Gaza’s hospitals are shutting down under the strain. Nurse Randa Saied described a scene of “pure terror” when the European Hospital in Khan Younis was hit by an Israeli strike. The facility is no longer functional, with patients and staff now relocated to Nasser Hospital, which is also overwhelmed.
Doctors say they are running out of basic supplies like gauze and painkillers. Nurse Rewaa Mohsen, sheltering in Deir al-Balah with her daughters, said she is down to her final stockpiled diapers and fears for her children’s safety amid relentless bombing.
‘Where Else Will I Go?’

When Mohsen returned to her apartment after a nearby strike, she found the windows and doors blown off. “Thank God that I am still alive with my girls,” she said. But when asked if she would relocate, her response reflected the hopelessness shared by many: “Where else will I go?”
Humanitarian Aid Debate Intensifies
The U.S. has proposed a new aid delivery system via private companies, secured by Israeli forces. However, the UN has criticized the plan as a potential “weaponization of aid” and warned it may not address the immediate suffering on the ground.
