Fullkrug’s Frustration After Late Equaliser
West Ham United manager Graham Potter has addressed the recent public outburst by striker Niclas Fullkrug, describing it as “not helpful” to the club and urging players to voice their frustrations behind closed doors. The remarks come after West Ham dropped two points in a 2-2 draw with relegated Southampton, where a late equaliser sparked Fullkrug’s angry response.
The 32-year-old Germany international, who joined the Hammers in January, was visibly frustrated post-match. In a blunt interview, Fullkrug criticised the attitude of some teammates, accusing them of “not listening” to the manager and showing a lack of motivation. His comments drew mixed reactions from fans and pundits alike.
Potter’s Measured Response
Speaking ahead of West Ham’s upcoming clash with Brighton, Potter acknowledged Fullkrug’s passion but emphasized the importance of unity and internal communication.
“I think he [Fullkrug] wears his heart on his sleeve,” said Potter. “I would disagree with him in some things and agree with him in others. But he’s entitled to his opinion.”
The West Ham boss added, “As a senior player, we’ve had lots of honest conversations. And I think for me, it’s better to have the conversations in private, not in public.”
Team Morale and Club Responsibility
Potter made it clear that while honesty is crucial in a professional environment, players must be mindful of how their words impact the wider group. “You need to be honest. You need to be able to say what you think. That’s for sure. And then you have to think about the team as well,” he stated.
“We have a responsibility to the team and the club,” Potter continued. “And from my perspective, sometimes I could be honest about how I really feel. But I don’t think it’s helpful to the players. I don’t think it’s helpful to the club.”
The manager concluded by stressing the importance of accountability and professionalism. “So, we all have to be aware of our responsibilities as well.”
Struggles Under Potter’s Tenure
Since Potter took over in January, West Ham have earned just 13 points in 13 Premier League matches, a run that has left them dangerously close to the relegation zone in 17th place. The team’s inconsistent performances have led to growing concerns among supporters.
Saturday’s trip to 10th-placed Brighton will be a crucial opportunity for West Ham to turn their form around and restore some dressing room harmony.
Whether Fullkrug’s emotional plea will galvanize the squad or deepen internal rifts remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: Potter is urging calm heads and collective responsibility as the season nears its conclusion.
