Harvey Weinstein Moved to Hospital from Rikers Amid Health Concerns Ahead of Retrial
Disgraced former Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein has been transferred from Rikers Island prison to Bellevue Hospital in New York following an emergency health request from his legal team.
Weinstein, 73, is said to be suffering from multiple serious medical conditions including cancer, diabetes, and a range of other issues that require him to take up to 19 different medications daily.
Hospital Transfer Approved Ahead of Retrial
The move comes just days before his retrial is set to begin. His lawyers argued that the poor conditions and lack of adequate care at Rikers posed significant risks to his health.
In a previous court appearance in January, Weinstein made an emotional plea to the judge, stating he feared he “might not live much longer” and described Rikers Island as a “hellhole” offering substandard and unhygienic medical care.
Still Fit for Trial, Say Observers
Despite his medical complaints, legal observers report that Weinstein has appeared alert and engaged during previous court sessions. He has been seen speaking with his attorneys and following proceedings without difficulty.
This has led some to question whether the health concerns might delay or influence the retrial, although for now, the court has not suggested any changes to the schedule based on his condition.
What’s Next?
Weinstein is expected to continue traveling to court from Bellevue Hospital rather than Rikers Island as his trial proceedings continue. His legal team is likely to push for ongoing medical accommodations.
The retrial follows the overturning of his 2020 conviction in New York, with prosecutors preparing to once again present evidence against the once-powerful producer, whose downfall helped ignite the #MeToo movement.
