Gujarat Titans are likely to announce Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis as a replacement for England’s Jos Buttler for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The development comes as Buttler is expected to leave the IPL early due to his national duty with England’s white-ball squad for their series against West Indies, starting May 29.
Buttler has been in excellent form this season, playing a key role in Gujarat Titans’ campaign. However, due to the tournament being extended following the temporary suspension over India-Pakistan tensions, the final will now take place on June 3, clashing with England’s international schedule.
According to NewsWire.lk, Mendis is expected to be officially announced by Gujarat Titans soon. If confirmed, he will become the second Sri Lankan player in the squad after Dasun Shanaka, who was signed earlier this season as a replacement for Glenn Phillips.
Mendis’ PSL Future Uncertain
Kusal Mendis was actively playing for Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) before the tournament was paused due to diplomatic tensions. With PSL set to resume on May 17, it’s uncertain whether Mendis will return to Pakistan or opt to join IPL instead.
Gujarat Titans’ 2025 IPL Performance
The Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans have been one of the top-performing teams this season, with eight wins from 11 matches. They are currently tied with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at 16 points, but sit atop the points table thanks to a superior net-run rate.
Buttler’s Departure and England Series
England’s upcoming tour of the West Indies has impacted multiple IPL teams relying on English players. With Jos Buttler prioritizing international commitments, Gujarat will look to Mendis for top-order firepower and flexibility in the middle overs.
Will Kusal Mendis Be a Game-Changer?
Mendis brings valuable international experience and has been in solid form recently. If he joins Gujarat Titans, his presence could provide much-needed stability and strike rotation, especially in crunch knockout matches leading to the final.
