One Point Away from History at Anfield

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has called for full focus and support from the Anfield faithful as his team stands just one point away from securing the club’s historic 20th top-flight title. The Reds host Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, knowing that a draw will be enough to seal the Premier League crown with four matches to spare.

After Arsenal dropped points in a midweek draw with Crystal Palace, the door opened for Liverpool to clinch the league in front of a home crowd — something they were denied in the 2019-20 season due to Covid restrictions.

Slot: “We Still Need a Point”

“That’s a big responsibility,” Slot said during Friday’s pre-match press conference. “We are aware that the last time this club won the league, it was during Covid. Everybody is looking forward to Sunday, but we know there’s still a job to be done.”

The Dutch manager, who replaced Jürgen Klopp last summer, added, “We still need a point. It’s a nice game to look forward to, but it’s also a responsibility we have for Sunday. Hopefully, our fans know that and support us in the best possible way – like they have all season.”

Tottenham’s Poor Anfield Record

Tottenham have not won at Anfield since 2011 and arrive amid a shaky run of form. Having lost 18 league matches this season and with their sights partially set on a Europa League semi-final first leg against Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt, the North London club face a daunting challenge.

Liverpool, meanwhile, boast the best home record in the Premier League this season, having earned 41 points from 16 games. The Reds have suffered just two league defeats all campaign, only one of them coming at Anfield.

Slot Defends Premier League’s Competitiveness

Responding to suggestions that the Premier League has been less competitive this season, Slot dismissed the narrative, emphasizing the league’s depth and unpredictability.

“It’s a really difficult league because there’s never been an easy game,” he said. “In previous years, it was quite clear who would finish in the top four. This season, the race has been tighter than ever.”

Slot also noted the financial parity now present across the league. “Either the top teams like us, City, and Arsenal have dropped in quality, or the rest of the league now has the spending power to compete. It’s probably a bit of both.”

Klopp’s Legacy and a New Era at Anfield

Securing the Premier League title would not only mark Liverpool’s second in the modern era but also solidify Arne Slot’s debut season as a historic success following Klopp’s iconic reign. Lifting the trophy in front of a packed Anfield would be a poetic moment, correcting the silent celebrations of 2020.
