Militants Open Fire on Tourists in Baisaran Meadow

In a tragic turn of events, a militant attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, claimed the life of one tourist and left at least 20 others injured on Tuesday. According to local police sources, two of the victims are in critical condition. The attack occurred in Baisaran, a scenic but remote meadow often frequented by tourists during peak travel season.
Police officials stated that two to three militants appeared suddenly and opened indiscriminate fire at tourists gathered in the area. “Initial reports suggest that eight tourists were critically injured. Our rescue teams, supported by Army and paramilitary forces, immediately rushed to the spot for evacuation and security operations,” said a senior officer involved in the response.
Baisaran, accessible only by foot, is known for its lush landscapes and has always been a popular draw for domestic and international tourists. The sudden attack has sent shockwaves through the region, which had recently been experiencing a tourism revival.
Security Forces Launch Manhunt, Baisaran Sealed Off
Following the attack, a joint operation by the Jammu & Kashmir Police, Army, and CRPF was launched to trace and neutralize the militants responsible. The area was cordoned off, and tourists were evacuated with immediate medical assistance provided to the injured. Local hospitals in Anantnag and Srinagar are currently treating the wounded, with trauma care activated for the critically injured.
This marks the first such attack targeting tourists in Kashmir this year. A similar, albeit less deadly, attack occurred in May last year in Pahalgam, injuring two visitors. Security agencies are now probing possible intelligence lapses and reviewing existing safety protocols for tourists.
Nationwide Condemnation and Political Reactions
The attack drew sharp condemnation from across the political spectrum. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently in Jeddah, condemned the attack via social media and spoke to Home Minister Amit Shah over the incident.
“I strongly condemn the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice,” the Prime Minister tweeted.
Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to visit Srinagar shortly to review the security situation on the ground. Meanwhile, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti and People’s Conference leader Sajad Lone also denounced the attack, calling it a cowardly attempt to destabilize Kashmir’s economy and revive fear in the Valley.
“This violence is unacceptable and must be condemned. Kashmir has always welcomed tourists with open arms. A full investigation is needed, and steps must be taken to prevent such tragedies in the future,” said Mehbooba Mufti.
Sajad Lone referred to the attackers as “enemies of our future,” stating, “They defile our hospitality, they are a curse on our present, and they are enemies of our children. Let us send a united message that terror has no place in our Valley.”
Tourism Sector Shaken, Authorities Urged to Boost Security
Tuesday’s attack comes at a time when Kashmir’s tourism sector was showing signs of revival after years of political unrest and pandemic-related restrictions. The incident is expected to cast a shadow over the upcoming travel season, potentially deterring visitors despite the Valley’s unmatched natural beauty.
Local tourism operators and business owners have expressed deep concern, urging the government to step up protection and ensure safety for all travelers. “We cannot afford to go back to those dark days,” said a hotelier in Pahalgam. “This is a critical time for us. The administration must act fast to restore confidence.”
