More than a week after the deadly Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives, there are strong indications that the terrorists responsible are still operating in the south Kashmir region. According to sources within the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the attackers are likely hiding in the dense forests of South Kashmir, where they continue to be a significant threat. The terrorists are believed to be self-sufficient, carrying provisions and utilizing ultra-secure communication systems to evade security forces.

The Attack: A Chilling Orchestrated Assault

The terror attack on April 22, which took place in Pahalgam’s Baisaran valley, remains one of the deadliest in recent times. Sources revealed that during the assault, additional terrorists were likely stationed at a distance to provide cover fire in case security forces attempted a swift response. The attackers were reportedly self-reliant, with provisions like food and supplies, enabling them to survive for extended periods in the region without relying on external support.

The Attackers: Precise Execution and Sophisticated Tactics

The attack on tourists in the Baisaran meadow, known as the “mini Switzerland of India,” was executed with chilling precision. Eyewitnesses revealed that the attackers were well-organized, with four terrorists involved in the operation. Two terrorists entered the site through the main gate, one stationed at the exit, and the fourth suspect likely hiding in the surrounding pine forest to provide backup fire.

Witnesses shared harrowing accounts of the attack, where the terrorists initially attempted to segregate the crowd based on gender and religion. The attackers demanded that people recite the Kalma (Islamic declaration of faith) before opening fire indiscriminately. Among the first victims was Navy officer Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, who had just entered the park when the shooting began.

The Challenges for Security Forces

Adding to the complexity of the operation, the terrorists used an ultra-secure communication system during the attack. This system, which does not require a SIM card and allows for encrypted short-range messaging, made it difficult for law enforcement agencies to track their movements in real-time. This technological advantage has significantly hampered security forces’ efforts to quickly identify and apprehend the attackers.

Reconnaissance and Pre-attack Planning

Investigators have discovered that the attackers conducted detailed reconnaissance of the region a week before the assault. On April 15, they surveyed several potential locations for the attack, including a local amusement park, but decided to abandon that plan due to heightened security at the site. This prior surveillance highlights the attackers’ strategic approach and their intention to target areas with high foot traffic.

Conclusion: A Dangerous Situation for Kashmir’s Security

Despite the ongoing efforts of security forces to neutralize the threat, the terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack remain elusive and highly organized. The use of encrypted communications and their self-reliance on supplies in the rugged terrain makes it increasingly difficult for authorities to bring them to justice. As the investigation continues, it is clear that these terrorists are still active in the region, posing a serious challenge to Kashmir’s security and stability.
