Retired Sub-Postmistress, 79, Earns Third Degree and Eyes a PhD
Pat Wetherell, a retired sub-postmistress from Middlesbrough, has achieved her third university degree at the age of 79, and says she’s not stopping yet—she’s now considering pursuing a PhD.
Pat and her husband Ivan were among the first wave of students to embrace the Open University (OU) when it launched in 1971. At the time, they had young children and no television—something they had vowed never to own. But the OU’s lessons were broadcast on TV, prompting them to purchase one specifically for their studies.
They studied together for about 10 hours each week once their children were in bed, with Ivan choosing Maths and Pat taking Humanities and Understanding Society. Ivan went on to graduate in 1977, while Pat, too shy to attend, quietly celebrated her own achievements.
“The More I Learn, The More I Realize I Don’t Know”
Driven by curiosity, Pat earned her second degree in 1994—a BA in History from Teesside University. Her interest in history was sparked during her time as a sub-postmistress in the former mining village of Charltons, where she heard captivating stories from ex-miners and their families. She collected memorabilia, conducted interviews, and began to explore the area’s local heritage.
When her son and great-niece both earned master’s degrees, Pat thought: “I think I’ll try and get a master’s as well.” And she did—completing her MA in History from the Open University.
Finally Celebrating in a Cap and Gown
Unlike her previous graduations, Pat attended this ceremony—at the insistence of her family. Her son was overcome with emotion, shedding tears as he watched her walk across the stage.
Her husband Ivan couldn’t be prouder, saying, “I’m showing her photo in her gown to anybody who stands still long enough.”
“You Are Never Too Old”
Now approaching her 80th birthday in September, Pat is seriously considering a PhD. “I am 80 in September so maybe I should call it a day,” she said with a smile, “but I don’t want to.”
Her message to anyone unsure about returning to education? “You are never too old. If you have any doubts—just go for it!”
