Worries Over Fame and Family
Tina Knowles, fashion designer, businesswoman, and matriarch of one of the most famous families in entertainment, has opened up about her concerns regarding the impact of fame on her grandchildren. Speaking to the BBC ahead of the release of her new memoir Matriarch, Knowles reflected on the challenges that come with being part of Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s inner circle, particularly for their children — Blue Ivy, Rumi, and Sir.
“If I had my first choice, they would not have to deal with the things that they have to deal with as kids,” Knowles said. While the children are currently shielded from most media noise, she fears they will one day be exposed to online criticism and misinformation. “And I do worry about that,” she added.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z: Parents First, Superstars Second
Despite the intense media scrutiny, Tina Knowles praised her daughter and son-in-law for their parenting. “They spend an abnormal amount of time with their children and they have great relationships with their kids,” she said. Knowles emphasized that the couple maintains a private family life and ensures their children are grounded, far from the limelight’s harshest glare.
She also revealed her close bond with granddaughter Blue Ivy, describing her as her “manager” due to the young teen’s assertiveness and Capricorn energy. “She’s my beauty guru. She’s always giving me advice about taking care of myself,” Knowles added with pride.
Inside “Matriarch”: From Galveston Roots to Global Fame
Matriarch offers readers a deep look into Tina Knowles’ life — from her childhood in racially segregated Galveston, Texas, to raising two daughters who became music icons. She recalls facing harassment in her youth and reflects on how those experiences shaped her strength and resilience.
Knowles never pushed her daughters into showbiz, insisting that their entry into music was entirely their choice. “They just lived and breathed music,” she said. Beyoncé and Solange’s early talents were nurtured in a household filled with creativity, love, and structure. She also spoke warmly of Kelly Rowland, who lived with the family and became a surrogate daughter.
Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé’s Solo Stardom, and Solange’s Rise
Knowles shares the journey from Destiny’s Child’s global dominance to her daughters’ solo careers. Beyoncé has since become a cultural phenomenon, recently winning Best Album at the Grammy Awards for Cowboy Carter, which explores Black roots in country music. Solange has also carved her path, winning a Grammy for her critically acclaimed single Cranes in the Sky.
Reflecting on Beyoncé’s treatment during the 2016 Country Music Awards and the racist backlash, Knowles said, “It is in her. It’s in her right to make whatever music she feels like making.”
Personal Struggles and Family Support
In a deeply personal chapter, Knowles discusses her Stage 1 breast cancer diagnosis and recovery. She credits her daughters and faith for getting her through the ordeal. “My daughters and my faith carried me through,” she writes.
She also addresses online rumors and the infamous 2014 elevator incident involving Solange and Jay-Z but chooses not to dwell on controversies. “While the world is creating lies and mess, my girls are somewhere in the studio or with their kids minding their business and living their best life.”
The Next Generation and a Future Film
Blue Ivy, at just 13, has already made waves by performing alongside Beyoncé on tour and voicing a role in Mufasa: The Lion King. But Tina Knowles says her grandchildren are not being pushed into the spotlight. “They’re being nurtured to be the best human beings they can be. That’s first priority.”
As for the future of her memoir, Knowles hints at the possibility of a film adaptation. “Not a reality series,” she clarifies, “but I would love to see a film made.” She hopes Matriarch will inspire audiences much like the Jacksons’ story inspired her own family.
