Tragedy Strikes on the Char Dham Yatra Route
On Sunday morning, June 15, 2025, a helicopter operated by Aryan Aviation crashed near Gaurikund in Uttarakhand, India, killing all seven people on board Uttarakhand helicopter— including a two-year-old child and the pilot. The aircraft was traveling from Kedarnath to Guptkashi, two key stops on the Char Dham Yatra Hindu pilgrimage route.

India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed the crash involved a Bell 407 helicopter (VT-BKA). The BBC reported that search and rescue teams, including the SDRF and local police, were immediately deployed and have since recovered all the bodies.
Investigation and Emergency Response
The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami called the event “deeply saddening” and has ordered a full inquiry. He emphasized that negligence at any level will be identified and punished.
The chief minister also ordered the suspension of all helicopter services to Char Dham until a full safety review is conducted. In a statement, he noted that there had already been three emergency landings and two helicopter crashes in the past 45 days on this route Uttarakhand helicopter.
Char Dham Yatra and Helicopter Travel Risks

The Char Dham Yatra — covering Kedarnath, Badrinath, Yamunotri, and Gangotri — attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims each year. Due to the high altitude and rugged terrain, helicopter services are often used by elderly or wealthy devotees seeking a quicker route to the temples. This growing industry, however, is raising safety concerns.
According to officials, all helicopter operators will now undergo scrutiny. Flying experience in high-altitude Himalayan zones will be a prerequisite before operations resume. A new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is also being drafted for stricter control, including a unified command center in Dehradun for all pilgrimage helicopter services.
Victims and Aftermath
The victims’ families are being contacted by local authorities. Dhami assured that the district administration will make necessary arrangements to return the bodies to their respective states. A child’s death in this crash has left the nation particularly shaken.
Conclusion: Safety Before Speed
This tragedy underscores the need for tighter aviation regulations, especially in sensitive pilgrimage zones. As authorities work to improve safety, the public mourns the loss of innocent lives and hopes for stronger action to prevent such disasters.
