WhatsApp document scanning is reportedly working on several exciting features for its Android users, including a built-in document scanning tool and advanced AI-powered message summaries. These features, which are already available or being tested on iOS, are expected to significantly enhance user experience and productivity inside the messaging app.
WhatsApp’s Document Scanning Feature Coming Soon to Android
According to WABetaInfo, the popular feature tracking site, WhatsApp is developing a document scanning feature for Android, which is currently in development within the WhatsApp beta version 2.25.18.29. The functionality was introduced to iOS users in December 2024 and allows users to scan documents directly within the app without needing a third-party application.
Once rolled out, Android users will see a new option labeled “Scan Document” when selecting attachments in chats. The feature will open the device’s camera, allowing users to manually capture or automatically scan documents using edge detection technology. After scanning, WhatsApp will generate a PDF file that can be shared with others or saved locally on the device.
While this tool is still under development and not yet available to beta testers, it promises to simplify document sharing for millions of Android users who rely on WhatsApp for business, education, and daily communications WhatsApp document scanning.
AI-Powered Summaries for Chat Messages
In addition to document scanning, WhatsApp is also testing AI-powered chat summaries for Android users. This experimental feature uses Meta’s Private Processing system to generate quick summaries of long message threads, helping users stay up-to-date without reading every message individually WhatsApp document scanning.
Some beta testers running WhatsApp beta version 2.25.18.18 and above may already see a “Summarise with Meta AI” button inside chats containing a high volume of unread messages. Privacy Protections with Private Processing
The AI summarization feature is being handled carefully with privacy in mind. Meta’s Private Processing ensures that data is processed securely and locally when possible. Notably, if Advanced Chat Protection is enabled for a specific chat, AI-generated summaries will not be available, maintaining user confidentiality for sensitive conversations.
WhatsApp Continues Expanding AI Capabilities
WhatsApp’s integration of AI features aligns with Meta’s broader push to embed AI across its product suite. Recent AI advancements include tools for personalized chatbots, auto-download controls, partial message copying, and potentially a new Logout button for users who want temporary breaks from WhatsApp.
For users needing to scan documents today, Android smartphones already offer alternatives like the Google Drive scanner until WhatsApp’s native solution becomes available in its stable release.
When Will These Features Launch?
There is no official release date yet, but both the document scanning tool and AI summaries are expected to roll out gradually to beta users before reaching the general public in late 2025.
