A Farewell Fitting for a Humble Pope
In a rare display of unity, the powerful and the poor gathered in Rome to bid farewell to Pope Francis, who passed away at age 88 following a stroke. The Vatican became the epicenter of global mourning, as thousands flocked to pay their respects to a pope remembered for his humility, compassion, and relentless advocacy for the marginalized.

Global Leaders Join the Masses at St Peter’s Basilica
Heads of state, royalty, and citizens from all walks of life stood shoulder to shoulder in St Peter’s Basilica. The Vatican confirmed that 130 official delegations had arrived, including 50 heads of state and 10 reigning monarchs. Among the dignitaries were U.S. President Donald Trump and Argentine President Javier Milei, both in attendance to honor the late pontiff from Argentina.
More than 90,000 mourners passed through the basilica to view Pope Francis’ open casket, prompting Vatican officials to keep the basilica open overnight. Clad in red papal robes with a bishop’s miter and a rosary in hand, Francis lay in state in front of the main altar—his presence drawing waves of reverence and emotion from the crowd.
A Pope of the People
Francis was widely regarded as the “pope of the forgotten.” His death has sparked reflection on his deep commitment to the poor, homeless, and disenfranchised. Emanuela Bisco, who also attended St John Paul II’s funeral 20 years ago, described Francis as a champion of the people. “He was close to the simplest people, the homeless who were not pushed away,” she said. “I hope the next pope will continue his legacy.”
Preparations for the Papal Conclave
While the conclave to elect a new pope will not commence until at least May 5, cardinals have already started assembling in Rome. On Thursday, 113 cardinals gathered to begin preliminary discussions, with further meetings planned before the formal process begins. Italian Cardinal Fernando Filoni emphasized that they are still in the “organizational phase.”
A Burial in Keeping with Simplicity
Pope Francis’ final resting place reflects his lifelong emphasis on modesty and spirituality. He chose to be buried in St Mary Major Basilica, near the revered Madonna icon he often prayed before. In a moving tribute to his values, a group of poor and needy individuals will meet his coffin when it arrives at the basilica.
The tombstone is a simple marble slab with the Latin engraving “Franciscus,” as requested in his last testament. This understated burial contrasts sharply with traditional papal funerals and underlines Francis’ lifelong mission of humility and service.
A Legacy That Transcends Borders
Pope Francis redefined the modern papacy, emphasizing compassion over protocol and service over status. His efforts to modernize the Catholic Church and reach out to those on the margins made him beloved by millions worldwide. As the Church prepares for its next leader, many hope that his successor will carry forward the same vision of empathy, inclusion, and reform.
