“This decision came down to our family’s safety and the importance of dedicating all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for,” Mamdani said in a statement.
Astoria, a diverse and vibrant Queens neighbourhood known for its immigrant communities and global food scene, has been Mamdani’s home throughout his political rise. In his statement, he made clear that emotional ties to the area remain strong.

Bloomberg argued that Gracie Mansion should primarily serve as a public space, and he oversaw an extensive renovation of the ageing property as part of that vision.
Mamdani’s decision, by contrast, restores the tradition of the mayor physically residing in the landmark building.
Legends, Lore, and “Ghost Stories”
Gracie Mansion is also known for its folklore. Over the years, several mayoral families have spoken publicly about strange occurrences inside the mansion.
Chirlane McCray, wife of former Mayor Bill de Blasio, once reported doors opening and closing on their own and mysterious creaks in the floorboards. Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more direct.
“I don’t care what anyone says,” Adams said in 2022. “There are ghosts in there.”
