Skirmish at the Line of Control revives tensions in volatile region
SRINAGAR: Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged fire across the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir on Friday, in the latest flare-up in the disputed Himalayan region. Military officials on both sides confirmed the incident, which occurred near the Poonch sector — a frequently tense area along the de facto border.
According to Indian defense sources, Pakistani forces initiated “unprovoked” firing on forward positions early in the morning, prompting a “strong and calibrated” response. No casualties were immediately reported on the Indian side.
Pakistan’s military issued a statement accusing Indian troops of violating the ceasefire agreement, saying that their troops “responded appropriately” to the “Indian aggression.” It also reported that one soldier was injured during the exchange.
Fragile Peace Under Strain
The latest incident is one of several sporadic violations reported since India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire in February 2021, which had led to a notable reduction in cross-border violence. But tensions have resurfaced amid political rhetoric and rising militant activity in Indian-administered Kashmir.
“We are monitoring the situation closely,” an Indian army spokesperson said. “Our troops remain on high alert and prepared to respond to any further provocations.”
Political Ramifications
The skirmish comes at a sensitive time, as India prepares for national elections and Pakistan grapples with internal security concerns and a volatile political landscape. Analysts warn that renewed clashes in Kashmir could inflame nationalist sentiment on both sides, derailing diplomatic efforts and further complicating regional stability.
Kashmir has long been a flashpoint between the nuclear-armed neighbors, who have fought three wars since their independence in 1947 — two of them over Kashmir. Despite multiple rounds of talks, the region remains divided and heavily militarized.
International Response
There was no immediate reaction from the international community, but the United Nations has previously urged restraint and dialogue in response to similar incidents. Human rights organizations have also expressed concern over the impact of such clashes on civilian populations living near the LoC.
More updates are expected as the situation develops.
