Dr. Kailas Shinde, Commissioner of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), has set a strict deadline of May 15, 2025, for the completion of all pre-monsoon preparedness activities. His directives came during a high-level City Disaster Management Committee meeting held at the NMMC headquarters.

Monsoon-Preparedness Focus Areas

During the meeting, Dr. Shinde emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts across all civic bodies, including NMMC, CIDCO, MIDC, MMRDA, Railways, Police, and other utilities. The major focus areas outlined were:

• Swift completion of drain and sewer cleaning operations
• Road repairs, culvert maintenance, and footpath improvements
• Relocation of slums and vulnerable populations from flood-prone zones
• Clearing of landslide-prone areas, especially in Digha’s Ilthanpada locality
• Structural audits of hoardings and removal of unauthorized ones
• Deployment of pumps and emergency equipment in waterlogging hotspots
• Immediate repairs to broken substations and exposed power cables

Disaster Management Measures

Dr. Shinde directed the establishment of 24×7 control rooms at municipal offices and fire stations. He stressed that temporary shelters must be identified, stocked with food and essentials, and kept ready to accommodate citizens during emergencies.

The Health Department has been instructed to ramp up monitoring for vector-borne diseases like dengue and malaria. An increased number of water quality checks and stockpiling of essential medicines are also on the agenda to prevent health crises during the rains.

Preventive Measures for Public Safety

Highlighting last year’s hoarding collapse incident in Ghatkopar, Dr. Shinde ordered rigorous structural audits and removal of illegal hoardings. Hazardous tree branches are to be trimmed, and emergency crews must be ready to clear debris immediately during heavy rains or storms.

“No authority should work in silos. Only coordinated efforts can prevent monsoon disasters,” said Dr. Shinde. The Commissioner has warned that he will personally inspect the progress and hold departments accountable for any delays or shortcomings.
