Storm Halts First Round as 24 Players, Including Lexi Thompson and Ingrid Lindblad, Fail to Finish
THE WOODLANDS, Texas: Haeran Ryu of South Korea and Yan Liu of China each fired bogey-free 7-under 65s to share the lead after a weather-suspended opening round of the 2025 Chevron Championship, the first major of the LPGA season.
Meanwhile, defending champion Nelly Korda endured a disappointing day, carding a 77 that leaves her 12 shots off the lead and in danger of missing the cut.
Play was suspended late Thursday due to an approaching storm at The Club at Carlton Woods, with 24 players unable to complete their rounds.

Ryu and Liu Shine With Precision
Ryu got off to a fast start, making five birdies in her first 10 holes and capping her round with a final birdie on the ninth. The South Korean, who switched putters midway through last week’s tournament, said her improved comfort on the greens was a key factor.
“It’s really good for me,” she said, adding that she had been opening the putter face too often with her previous model.
Liu, seeking her maiden LPGA win, came alive on her back nine with four birdies in a five-hole stretch. “This week, I fixed my driver, so it feels very solid,” said the Chinese golfer, who struggled off the tee in Los Angeles last week.
Korda Faces Uphill Battle
Korda, last year’s champion, bogeyed four consecutive holes early and was 4-over par after just six holes. She added two more bogeys on the back nine and closed with a 5-over 77.
“I’m going to go and practice and see where it takes me,” Korda said, acknowledging the need to regroup as she chases her third career major title.
Other Notables: Kim, Jutanugarn, and Suspended Rounds
Hyo Joo Kim finished a stroke back after a bogey on the 18th, posting a 66. The group tied at 68 included Ariya Jutanugarn, Hye-Jin Choi, Carlotta Ciganda, Manon De Roey, and Brooke Matthews.
Lucy Li was at 4-under through 14 holes when play was suspended. Among those who did not finish were Lexi Thompson, who retired from full-time golf last year and was at 1-over with one hole remaining, and LPGA rookie Ingrid Lindblad of Sweden, who recently claimed her first win in Los Angeles. Lindblad was 2-over with one hole to play, despite a triple bogey on the par-4 14th.
Looking Ahead
The Chevron Championship resumes Friday with the completion of the first round. All eyes will be on whether Korda can mount a comeback and if Ryu or Liu can sustain their stellar form under pressure.
